Professional Lead Paint Removal For Your Household Furniture

When it comes to restoring your vintage and antique furniture, one of the most critical safety concerns is the presence of lead paint. Lead-based paints were commonly used on furniture and household items until they were banned for residential use in 1978. If you own furniture manufactured before this date, there’s a significant chance it contains lead paint, making professional lead paint removal and stripping services essential for safe restoration.

Understanding Lead Paint Hazards in Furniture

Lead paint poses serious health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women. When disturbed through sanding, scraping, or heating, lead paint creates toxic dust and fumes that can cause lead poisoning. Symptoms of lead exposure include developmental delays, learning difficulties, irritability, weight loss, and in severe cases, seizures and coma. The seriousness of the symptoms, and the fact that they don’t show up many times till years down the road, make it critical that you deal with your lead paint carefully.

That’s why our clients trust us to help them with their lead paint removal from their furniture. Our team hasthe expertise, equipment, and training necessary to safely handle lead-contaminated furniture. We follow strict protocols to contain and dispose of lead waste properly, so you don’t have to mess with it!

“Does Excel Shop Use the ‘Dip and Strip’ Process?”

We do not use “Dip and Strip”, though this is a very common question that we get. Here’s our take and our process:

Instead of Dip and Strip, we use a “Flow Over” stripping system.  Here’s our 5 Step Process for Stripping Furniture and other home accessories:

      1. The furniture/doors/mantels, etc… that we are stripping goes into a tank where we hose it down with a stripping solution, let it sit, scrub it, hose it down again, let it sit, and then scrub it.

      1. We repeat this process until the varnish or paint has been completely removed

      1. We remove the piece from the tank, carefully wash it to remove any remaining strip solution, and then

      1. Set it in the sun to dry.

We don’t use “Dip and Strip” because it is much messier, more hazardous, and far more expensive and wasteful of the stripping solution. It also much harder on the furniture and can often be destructive.

With our dedicated flow over process at Excel Shop, the strip solution can be recycled and used again and again, which is better for the customer and the environment.
